Our Programs - Carbon Offsets

Businesses — Carbon Neutral Travel & Tourism

As a leading authority on Carbon Management and offsetting within the travel and tourism industry, Sustainable Travel International specializes in providing guidance and direction to companies of all sizes, from industry leaders to small, local micro-enterprises. Any company in the travel trade that claims to be “green” should have a Carbon Management and offset program in place. This is why we offer services that are unique to each sector, including but not limited to accommodations, airlines, car rental agencies, and cruise lines.

Airlines & Carbon Emissions

Sustainable Travel International has more experience in working with airlines than any other offset provider in the marketplace. We’ve helped airlines of all sizes implement Carbon Management Solutions, from some of largest in the world like United Air Lines and Continental Airlines to smaller regional airlines like Copa, Frontier and Midwest.

Although we offer a variety of programs that are designed to complement and enhance airlines’ sustainability initiatives, most of our clients are interested in custom carbon footprint calculators. We offer PCI Compliant enterprise level offset solutions that automatically calculate carbon emissions on a flight-by-flight basis based specifically on the emissions associated with the types of aircraft utilized in your fleet, and that includes options like cargo offsetting and the opportunity for passengers to choose between multiple offset portfolios.

Carbon Neutral Accommodations

Travel Green™

TravelGreen is a program that affords your customers an opportunity to make contributions toward small amounts of clean renewable energy. Though this turn-key solution, your guests can positively impact the environment during their stay and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions for US$1.00 per night.

Your guests investment is equal to offsetting 33.6 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, represents 24 kilowatt-hours of electricity supplied by new wind and solar power, and equates to 100 percent of the energy consumption related to one night's hotel stay. The US$1.00 Carbon Offset certificates can be acquired at the hotel during the reservation process, upon check-in or check-out.

Participating hospitality operations receive TravelGreen Carbon Offset certificates and related marketing materials. You only pay for the Carbon Offset certificates you commit to selling up front. There are no additional upfront costs other than the cost of printing these materials, which is optional if you’re interested in an electronic solution.

Hoteliers also have the option to evolve toward carbon neutral by offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their operations at wholesale rates.

For more information, please call 800-276-7764, email Peter D. Krahenbuhl, or download our TravelGreen tool kit.

Carbon Footprint Calculators

Hoteliers who are interested in offering their guests an opportunity to offset their travels to and from their facilities should consider implementing a carbon calculator on their websites, as well as integrating it into their customer communications. Sustainable Travel International offers custom web-based carbon calculators for hoteliers, as well as consumer-facing solutions, which use the latest and most accurate data to estimate your facility or guest related carbon emissions. Carbon Management Services

Carbon Management Services help hospitality operations track their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while providing them with valuable information for measuring the performance of their environmental initiatives.

A hotel is a complex entity that requires an ongoing and in depth analysis to accurately calculate its greenhouse gas emissions, which change over time and vary depending on a number of factors. This comes at a moment when impending regulatory frameworks for corporate accountability towards greenhouse gas emissions converge with increased consumer awareness and willingness to take responsibility for one’s carbon footprint.

We offer a simple, affordable base service where hotel data is collected, analyzed, and reported in a standardized format, called an Emissions Scorecard, which evaluates the GHG emissions from operations and contains the following information:

  • Line-item usage of each source of GHG emissions, reductions, and offsets
  • The metric ton and pound equivalent of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e, a standard denominator that combines all Greenhouse Gases in one measurement using Carbon Dioxide as the base variable) from each source, in total and per occupied room figures
  • Net carbon footprint from operations, including the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Per Occupied Room (GEPOR)
  • Line-item and summary data expressed in monthly and year-to-date figures
  • The percentage of greenhouse gas emissions represented by each source’s usage, in total emissions terms and within each respective scope (I, II, or III)
  • A graph displaying the monthly pace of Greenhouse Gas Emissions for the current year
  • A graph displaying the monthly pace of GEPOR for the current year
